This comes from a desire to see my mother not just as “my mom,” but as a person who existed before me and continues beyond me. I use her maiden name as a way back to her—who she was before she became everything to everyone else.
She is many things at once: a mother, a lover, a wife, a friend. She’s silly, yet serious, soft, yet unbreakable. She laughs loudly, shows up when it matters, and carries more than most people ever notice. Some days she feels entirely human. Other days, she feels superhuman.
This work is made up of moments—small, ordinary, intimate ones—that together form a fuller picture of her life. It isn’t about perfection or nostalgia. It’s about closeness. About paying attention. About honoring a woman who has spent so much of her life caring for others, and taking the time to see her clearly.
This is, at its core, an act of love.
